Nine persons were arrested on Monday on allegation of murdering a farm worker and his wife — both CPI(M) workers — in South 24 Paraganas district. While the police refused to disclose the political affiliation of the arrested, the CPI(M) leadership said that they belong to the party.
The CPI(M) leadership alleged that Trinamool Congress workers were behind the murder and their party workers were getting arrested on basis of “fabricated charges.” The Trinamool leadership has denied the allegation.
The deceased, Debaprasad Das and his wife Usharani Das, died on May 13, a day before the Panchayat elections, after their house was allegedly set on fire. The police lodged a murder case within couple of days of the incident.
“We have arrested nine persons in the murder case at Kakdwips Budhakhali village on Monday,” Tathagata Basu, SP, said.
