Nipah virus: Patient who tested positive makes further progress

The condition of patients in the isolation ward in the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, is stable. To continue other treatments, one person has been shifted to the ward and one to the intensive care unit.

Meanwhile, one of the contacts traced out of the 329 people who have had direct or indirect contact with the Nipah positive patient, has developed a fever. The person from Alappuzha has been admitted to the isolation ward in Alappuzha Medical College.

Among the contacts, 52 were said to be in the high-risk category while 277 were in the low-risk category.

The point of care Nipah detection centre set up in the Ernakulam medical college hospital is providing quicker results and making further treatments easier.

Ten more samples of body fluids were collected from admitted patients on Tuesday. The five samples collected on Monday had turned negative.

Experts from national virology institutes and other research institutes are collecting samples from fruit bats to look for the origin of the Nipah infection.

The district health authorities are continuing the training activities to strengthen various preventive activities against the spread of the virus.
