Zika cases touch 80 in Rajasthan

As the number of people infected with the Zika virus rose to 80 in Rajasthan, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday directed the National Centre for Disease Control to monitor cases on a daily basis while urging people not to panic.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review measures for prevention and control of the virus and of seasonal influenza, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reassured the States of all support from the Centre.

“For Rajasthan, we are monitoring the situation on a daily basis in regular coordination with the State Health Secretary,”Mr. Nadda said.

He urged people not to panic and instead cooperate with health officials in controlling the breeding of the vectors.

There was no shortage of medicines and testing kits, he assured.

330 teams deployed

An official statement issued after the meeting stated that Mr. Nadda was briefed about the Ministry’s initiatives directed at controlling Zika spread in Rajasthan.

While 80 cases have been reported from the State, 330 teams have already been deployed in the affected wards of Shastri Nagar in Jaipur and a population of over 4 lakh brought under surveillance as of Tuesday, the statement said.

“Around 86,903 houses have been surveyed. 2,04,875 breeding sites were checked for larvae breeding and 74,483 were found to have larvae breeding,” the statement said.

Health workers undertook on-the-spot source reduction and treated containers with temiphose during the survey besides carrying out focal spray and fogging in the affected areas, the statement added.
